About myself

I am very happy to be teaching Family and Consumer Homemaking in Malden. The subject is one of my favorites. I have previously taught this subject and also business education at the high school level. My background includes graduate degrees from Boston College and Framingham State College and a bachelor's degree from the Pennsylvania State University. Before teaching I was an assistant buyer in the fashion industry.

Grade 5

Grade 5 students learn hand sewing techniques. The projects they work on include a hand puppet, a small pillow, and if time allows, a small quilt. Recently the 5th graders have been very excited to design and create a character for studying rocks in their science class. Using fabrics and trims, they make a complete outfit to portray the characteristics of the "rock person."

Grade 6

The Grade 6 class is Introduction to Cooking. Students focus on nutrition and the Food Pyramid. They learn about kitchen safety, shopping for food and making consumer decisions. They prepare and eat healthy snacks.

Grade 7

Wow! Finally the Grade 7 students learn to prepare food in the classroom kitchens. They make a variety of recipes representing food groups on the Food Pyramid. Some of the recipes are: Fruit Crisp, Perfect Pancakes, Pumpkin Muffins, Chocolate Chip Cookies,Quick Dough Pizza, and Pasta with Tomato Sauce. Seventh graders also learn about Kitchen Safety and working together in groups. In the sewing area, seventh graders learn additional hand sewing stitches as well as sewing a "professional" suit or coat button. They also learn the basics of sewing on a sewing machine. Everyone makes a soft "back bag" as the first sewing machine project.

Grade 8

In Grade 8 sewing, the students learn basic embroidery stitches and can complete an embroidery project if they choose. The sewing machine project is an alphabet letter pillow. Eighth graders look forward to advancing their culinary skills. New recipes include: Soft Baked Pretzels, Coffee Cake Muffins, Flour Tortillas, Tacos with Meat Filling, and Sugar Cookies. The program emphasis remains with Nutrition, the Food Pyramid, kitchen safety, and working as part of a group.
