Chinese proverb

Butterfly Birthday

Out of an egg so small and round,
On a milkweed leaf above the ground,
Appears a caterpillar ready to eat
Leaf after leaf, so juicy and sweet.
It chomps and grows and sheds its skin,
Sheds its skin so light and thin.
Then upsidedown it hangs one day.
Curling it makes a letter J
The skin is split, no stripes are seen,
Called "chrysalis" it's mostly green!
Inside the changing pupa sleeps,
A butterfly secret it carefully keeps.
Quietly it works and waits and waits-
For wings-so it can celebrate.
Happy Birthday Butterfly!

It's that time of year again!! Monarch butterflies are preparing for their annual Fall migration to the beautiful sanctuaries in Mexico. We will begin our year studying these facinating creatures as they get ready to make their journey south. Budding lepidopterists will observe the miraculous changes that take place as our tiny caterpillars transform into magnificent butterflies. Excitement is in the air!!!
In addition we will also participate in a symbolic migration project with students in Mexico who will greet our hand crafted butterflies and watch over them during the winter months. The symbolic butterflies that we exchange are ambassadors that carry messages to the chidren in Mexico where Monarchs overwinter. They represent friendship and appreciation for the role Mexican people play in Monarch conservation. The butterflies are returned in the Spring when the real Monarchs are heading north.

Celebrity of the Month

This month we will explore the life and works of author Kevin Henkes. Kevin loved to draw at an early age and used to read his favorite books again and again. He published his first book at nineteen. Several of his books have mice as characters. He doesn't kmow exactly why he chose mice. He wanted to be funny and decided that using animal characters would be just right. His books are more than just funny though. They teach great lessons such as Be Yourself or Be Kind To Others! Chrysanthemum is one of our favorites. We discovered that she was named after a flower and were inspired to learn the meanings and origins of our names. Do you know what your name means?

Again this year the entire Beebe School will be incorporating principles of the Peacebuilders Program into our daily routines. It was designed to build positive social skills and encourages a sense of belonging for all children. We are hopeful that with practice peaceful behavior will become an integral part of the school's community and culture.

Peacebuilder's Pledge

I am a peacebuilder.
I pledge:
To praise people
To give up put-downs
To seek wise people
To notice and speak up about hurts I have caused
To right wrongs
To help others
I will build peace at home, at school and in my community each day.
I am a peacebuilder.

What can YOU do to make the world a better place....
PEACE BEGINS WITH YOU!!

Don't forget to sign up to be a "Mystery Guest!" Your child will love you for it......

In our classroom we utilize a "homework bag" to promote responsibility and to facilitate organizational skills. This consists of a spiral notebook and a zip-loc bag. Children record and complete daily assignments in the notebook, unless otherwise indicated. Any required worksheets or notices for that day are then placed in the bag along with the notebook. The "homework bag" should be returned to school each day.You may also use the notebook as a vehicle to communicate with me. In addition it is an expectation that children are reading every night for fifteen to twenty minutes as well as reviewing Math facts and weekly word lists. Many thanks for the support and guidance you provide at home.
