About Myself

Welcome! I am the Literacy Coach at the Ferryway School. This year I will be working with the teachers of grades K-5. I will help to provide them with support in reading to help them better meet the needs of their students. I'm in my 14th year of teaching; nine of those years have been with the Malden Public School system. I grew up in Malden and attended Malden Public Schools grades K-12. I hold a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and a Masters degree in Reading.

Role of the Literacy Coach

As a literacy coach, I help to provide professional development in reading for teachers. Our reading instruction is based on scientifically-based research. We focus on the five major components of reading instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension).

Parents of Gr. K-1 Students

At home we suggest parents help their children learn to read. You can practice the sounds of language. Help your child to separate the sounds in a word (ex./c/-/a/-/t/). Listen for beginning and ending sounds. Practice the alphabet by pointing out letters wherever you see them. Read alphabet books. Sing songs with rhymes. Read aloud books to you children and discuss what happened in the story.

Parents of Gr. 2 + Students

Encourage your children to read. Have them reread familiar books. Children need practice reading with expression using books they know. Build reading accuracy by having your child read aloud, point out words they missed and help them read words correctly. Support reading comprehension by talking with your child about what they are reading. Ask about new words. Talk about what happened in the story. Ask about the characters, places, and events that took place. Ask what new information they learned from the book. Encourage them to read on their own.

**All Parents**

Be patient with your child. Listen as your child practices reading. Let your child know how proud you are of their reading.
