About Myself Welcome! I am the Reading First Literacy Coach at the Ferryway School. This year I will be working with the teachers of grades K-3. I will help to provide them with lessons to use within their classrooms to better meet the needs of their students.
I'm in my 13th year of teaching; eight of those years have been here in the Malden Public School system. I grew up in Malden and attended Malden Public Schools grades K-12. I hold a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and a Masters degree in Reading.
Read First Grant Ferryway School is a recipient of the Read First federal grant. It is a grant that provides professional development in reading for teachers of grades K-3. Our reading instruction is based on scientifically-based research. We focus on the five major components of reading instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension).
Parents of Gr. K-1 Students At home we suggest parents help their children learn to read. You can practice the sounds of language. Read books and sing songs with rhymes and discuss them. Help your child to separate the sounds in a word (ex./c/-/a/-/t/). Listen for beginning and ending sounds. Practice the alphabet by pointing out letters wherever you see them. Read alphabet books. Read aloud to you children. Talk to your child about what happened in the story.
Parents of Gr. 2 - 3 Students Reread familiar books. Children need practice in reading comfortably and reading with expression using books they know. Build reading accuracy by having your child read aloud, point out words he/she missed and help him/her read words correctly. Build reading comprehension by talking with your child about what he/she is reading. Ask about new words. Talk about what happened in the story. Ask about the characters, places, and events that took place. Ask what new information she has learned from the book. Encourage him/her to read on his/her own.
**All Parents**Be patient with your child. Listen as your child practices reading. Let your child know how proud you are of their reading.
